Michael Ball and Alfie Boe, Together Again

You may find a review of two classical singers unusual content for The Mic, however when the offer to review the show came through, it was something we couldn’t refuse.

Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena played host to the two West End icons and proved a space perfectly suited to them. The lights dimmed as the audience rushed to their seats and the sounds of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘As If We Never Said Goodbye’ filtered through the arena. A photo montage of the two was projected on to the screens with images of them both performing and joking around in various countries across the world, providing the audience with a more intimate insight in to the two’s friendship. Entering the stage during the climax of the song the crowd were immediately dazzled by their sheer talent and personalities.

The show progressed through different moods, taking us on an ‘emotional rollercoaster’ through their variety of big band hits, ballads and show tunes. Both performers are well-versed in musical theatre. Ball began his career in the West End over 30 years ago making his debut as Marius in Les Mis and went on to play Raoul in Phantom of the Opera, while Boe started his career in the early 2000s and is best known for playing Jean Valjean in Les Mis. Knowing this I was initially wary that their egos would be too distracting from the performance, however I was pleasantly mistaken as neither performer showed any veneer of ego or arrogance. They entertained the crowd with their humorous banter, Alfie’s crude jokes and Michael’s radio persona taking over between numbers.

The night was certainly unforgettable, ending with them both donning ‘Choose Love’ t shirts and singing a Wham! medley, which left the crowd beaming.
