Clean Cut Kid @ Rescue Rooms, 23/10/17
Clean Cut Kid returned to Nottingham for a sold-out show at the Rescue Rooms, quickly curing the crowd of their Monday blues.
Leeds 4-piece Marsicans started off the night, introducing their quirky grooves to the audience. Self-described as ‘upbeat indie meets dirty pop’, the boys beamed throughout their whole set, slowly but surely warming up the audience to their tunes.
Callum Beattie followed, belting out rock and roll tunes with his band and an array of colourful guitars. His powerful voice and commanding stage presence were impressive, playing songs such as ‘Man Behind The Sun’ and ‘We Are Stars’ with confidence and charisma.
Finally, it was time for Clean Cut Kid to take the stage; opening with one of their early singles, ‘Runaway’, the band instantly drew the crowd closer, their vocals interspersed with whoops and cheers. Rightly so, as vocalist and guitarist Mike plunged into wailing guitar solos from the second song, ‘Stay’. Stage banter came through a strong Scouse accent; however, the majority of the packed venue had seen the band before, hence could understand his jokes and jests.
The band played all of the tracks from their debut album, eliciting huge sing-alongs and dancing in response to their mostly upbeat catalogue. The whole room was buzzing with energy to their fuzzy rock stylings.
Fans assisted in serenading Evelyn, keyboardist and wife of Mike, in her eponymous album track, as well as on ‘Leaving You Behind’, where she awarded Nottingham the title of ‘loudest chorus this week’.
Ballads such as ‘Brother of Mine’ and ‘Jean’ were emotional but powerful, reminding listeners to hold their loved ones close.
The set closed with my personal favourite track, ‘Felt’, a rock’n’roll rollercoaster to finish off the night…
But the band soon returned to the stage for an encore where they blasted through their biggest singles, ‘Pick Me Up’ and ‘Vitamin C’. The audience made the most of the last few minutes of pure joy, as the band close the ‘Felt’ chapter of their band, before going back to the studio to work on album number two!
